Quartz technology has been introduced to the watch-making industry in 1967 by the Centre Electronique Horloger. Quartz movements are based on a technology where Quartz crystals emit voltage, or pulses as a reaction to pressure. The produced voltage is then used to move the watch with extraordinarily high precision. Unlike mechanical or automatic chronographs, Quartz chronographs rely on batteries to function. The battery power triggers the Quartz crystal pulse activity which times the watch’s operation.
In some modern models other sources of power are used instead of battery. One variation is the solar Quartz chronograph where light energy is captured in photovoltaic cells, and then transforms into electrical energy transmitted to the Quartz crystals. Another variation is the Kinetic Quartz watch that much like automatic movements, uses the energy of the hands movement to power the Quartz crystals.
